Lençóis Maranhenses is a national park in northeastern Brazil. At first glance, this national park looks like your typical desert. Featuring large white sand dunes its easy to cast judgement however Lençóis Maranhenses is not a desert at all.

The area's location falls within the Amazon Basin. Thus, Lençóis Maranhenses is subject to regular rain seasons.  The result is for the area to start to accumulate fresh water in the troughs of the sand dunes. The water accumulates to the point that large lagoons are formed.

    Fun Facts:

    • The lagoons are multi coloured from green to black.
    • The lagoons can support life
    • The park has no direct road to it as no motorized vehicles are allowed
